A Brief Overview of the Evolution of GOSSEN
Together with his partner Otto Cohn, electrical engineer Paul Gossen founded “Paul Gossen Co. K.-G., Factory for Electrical Measuring Instruments” on the 1st of September, 1919. Photometry was added to the company’s research and manufacturing program in 1932.
The Gossen family sold 70% of the company to Bergmann EW AG and 30% to Siemens & Halske AG. Bergmann bought Siemens & Halske’s shares in 1965.
The company was renamed to Gossen GmbH.
Gossen GmbH was taken over by Gebr. Röchling KG and thus became part of the Röchling group, one of Germany’s leading industrial enterprises.
The company fused with Metrawatt GmbH in Nuremberg, which also belonged to the Röchling group and was previously one of Gossen’s most significant competitors in the industry sector. Gossen left its head office in Erlangen and moved to Nuremberg to the location of Metrawatt GmbH. Henceforth, the merged companies did business under the name Gossen-Metrawatt GmbH.
In November 1997, the business division for photometry was hived off from Gossen-Metrawatt GmbH and has since been doing business as an independent company under the name GOSSEN Foto- und Lichtmesstechnik GmbH.
